Hiking News: Hike Half Dome in Yosemite

June 29, 2010

Half Dome is one of the most famous landmarks at Yosemite National Park. The hike up to the top is a popular day hike that is on the strenuous side. If you have more than a day to make the hike, consider the backcountry campground at Little Yosemite Valley (you will need a wilderness permit for this campground) which is right near the trail-head to Half Dome and makes for a more leisurely, and if you go early enough, less crowded hike. I’ve done the hike many times and highly recommend it; the breathtaking view from the top is worth every step. Here is some more information on the hike including a video for those making the day hike.

Get Ready to Hike Half Dome : YosemiteBlog.com

Be warned however that lines are expected to be longer to climb Half Dome during the week as people who were planning to hike Half Dome during the weekend change their plans. The trail is hot, dry and exposed to sun. Take LOTS of water, …

National Park News: Acadia National Park on iPhone

June 28, 2010

“The next time you visit Acadia National Park, be sure to take your iPhone.

A school technology director from Yarmouth has developed a new application for the iPhone that offers a guided tour of the park right in the palm of your hand.

Kerry Gallivan, 36, the president and founder of Chimani LLC, said the idea for the Acadia application grew out of an experience he had while hiking in the park.

“I was on Gorham Mountain and was using my iPhone,” he said. ‘I wanted more information about the mountain and the trail I was on. I couldn’t find it, and I figured there were other people in the same situation. That was the inspiration. It was a solution to a problem I had experienced.’ ”  Read more.
